New 16 GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch models, double capacity

February 5th, 2008

With immediate availability, today Apple has announced the launch of new iPhone and iPod Touch models. The only change is to capacity. The iPhone is now available in a 16GB configuration for $499, and the iPod Touch is now available with 32GB for the same $499. The 8GB iPhone and Touch and 16GB Touch remain unaffected in price and availability.

Will these new models influence future purchasing decisions for you? $499, or a “half G” as some might call it, is entering pricey waters. Especially when you consider it’s still only a fraction of the capacity of the cheaper iPod Classic. I’m personally more than happy with 8GB (for now). But that’s mainly because I use it more as a PDA than an iPod. 10 years ago I was only dreaming about a PDA with 8GB storage.

iFob released: a “wireless Icebreaking Beacon”

February 4th, 2008

An interesting new app for iPhone/Touch and PC has been released. Using WiFi, the app finds other users also running iFob and helps you meet and interact. You can set a tagline anyone in your local area (same hotspot) can see. Messages can be exchanged, and new frindships can be made. If you leave the app running in the background as a service, it will alert you when when new “iFobs” enter your vicinity.

If it sounds a little strange to you, well… it is. The chances of you running into anyone also running “iFob” seem slim at best, at least until the SDK is out and the app gets the chance at a larger install base. While it’s being dubbed as a virtual “icebreaker”, I see it best suited as a local chat app for friends in class, likened to Pictochat on the DS. Minus the fun doodling.

AppSnapp / JailbreakMe.com updated

February 1st, 2008

If you are one who does a lot of tooling around and constantly finding yourself restoring to 1.1.1 and starting fresh, there are some new updates to JailbreakMe.com which will be of interest:

-Installs the latest version of Installer (3.0)
-Community Sources are now preinstalled
-Automatically OktoPreps (prepares for 1.1.2)
-More improvements listed here

This cuts out a few steps and sure to save a bit of time. The new processing for restoring from and back to 1.1.3 would be:

1. Restore to 1.1.1 in iTunes (shift+click Restore)
2. Jailbreak (visit Jailbreakme.com and click Install)
3. Update to 1.1.2 in iTunes (shift+click Update)
4. Jailbreak 1.1.2
5. Install BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH
5. Run Official 1.1.3 Upgrader from Install

“Secret” key not SDK related, decrypts ramdisks

January 30th, 2008

So much for the theory that this is the key to sign apps for iTunes deployment. George Hotz has figured out just what it does. From his blog:

Strip the first 0×800 bytes from your >= 1.1.1 firmware ramdisk

Run:
openssl enc -d -in ramdisk.dmg -out de.dmg -aes-128-cbc -K 188458A6D15034DFE386F23B61D43774 -iv 0

Ignore the error. Then there will be some garbage, signatures and certificates, at the end of the file. Remove it and mount your ramdisk.

Zibri (iPhone Elite member and the one that initially leaked the key) posted the following:

Where it came from?
We dumped it.

How.
God knows.

Now i wonder why it took a week to people to figure out what it was..

I also have a RAMDISK picture in my blog :)

P.S.
I don’t know who is/owns Austin Heap but i think he just found the key on my blog and posted it.
We got that key 2 days before my original post on my blog ( http://zibree.blogspot.com )

A note:
Finally someone took the time to see what door a key opens.. :)

Learning that Austin Heap is not an insider explains the confusion. It was on that site the key was on a page titled “iSDK”… which likely contributed to the rumors this key is related to that upcoming release.

Now that we know what this “secret” key does, the impact is still unclear. Is this a master key that will enable us to quickly decrypt all future firmwares? Or will it be easily revoked?

Dev-team releases 1.1.3 Jailbreak GUI on Installer

January 29th, 2008

1.1.3 Jailbreak GUI

The dev-team has released yet another 1.1.3 Jailbreak, this time in the form of a GUI app you can install on your 1.1.2 iPhone/Touch directly from Installer. It runs as a native app so it should provide a much nicer user experience. As you can see from the screens above, I’m already running 1.1.3 and it wouldn’t let me proceed any further to provide you more screenshot goodness :)

You can find it in Installer, named “Official 1.1.3 Upgrader” on the Community Sources.

iPhone SDK Key leaked? UPDATE: Nope

January 28th, 2008

It appears the iPhone SDK key has leaked, well before the SDK itself. Trusted iPhone Elite dev Zibri has posted the following image on his blog, with no further explanation:

iPhone SDK Key

The same key was also posted on this page of austinheap.com, with the title “BELIEVE IN iSDK.” Digg user “austinheap”, assumedly the owner of the site, was quick to post the story on the social bookmarking site with the description: “Somewhere in California Steve Jobs is killing someone with his bare hands. Immediate patch in expected via 1.1.4 before official iPhone SDK rollout.”

What transpires from this is yet to be seen. Gone unchecked, this could allow for unauthorized deployment of third party apps directly through iTunes, no more jailbreaking required. What is certain is apple has if not more moles working closely to the iPhone project. It was only last month the 1.1.3 firmware was leaked leaked weeks early to trusted members of the iPhone dev team, and no doubt attributed to the speediness of the 1.1.3 jailbreak. The originating 1.1.3 jailbreak method remains a close guarded secret amoung dev team members, so should a 1.1.4 update roll out before the SDK, a corresponding jailbreak is likely to follow.

UPDATE: The key’s mysteries have been unlocked.

Installer “main script execution failed” fix

January 28th, 2008

If you didn’t update Installer BEFORE updating to 1.1.3, or did but still get this error and need to fix permissions, try entering these commands via ssh:

cd /
cd Applications/
wget http://repository.apptapp.com/packages/System/Installer.zip
rm -rf Installer.app
unzip Installer.zip
chmod +s Installer.app/Installer
chown -R root:wheel Installer.app
rm Installer.zip

This replaces your copy of Installer with the latest version, and sets proper permissions.

Official 1.1.3 Jailbreak fixed/re-released + Sync Fix (on Installer)

January 27th, 2008

The Official dev-team jailbreak has been fixed and re-released. It is available to install directly from our Installer repo. Here is our complete guide:

1. You must be running 1.1.2 jailbroken. If you are on 1.1.1: install oktoprep, update to 1.1.2, and jailbreak. If you are on 1.1.3 already and want to start fresh: restore to 1.1.1, jailbreak (with jailbreakme.com), install oktoprep, update to 1.1.2, and jailbreak.

2. Install BSD Subsystem (version 1.5+ required). Set auto-lock to NEVER in preferences. Install SSH as a fail-safe.

3. Add http://www.modiphone.net/repo to your Installer sources. Refresh sources. Install “Jailbreak 1.1.3″ under Modiphone.net. This can take 20+ minutes. Your phone should reboot when done, and you will be in 1.1.3, fully jailbroken.

4. If you are experiencing syncing issues of contacts, events, etc, (with new or from the earlier jailbreak) install “1.1.3 Sync Fix”. This is also on our repo, under Modiphone.net.

Enjoy!

If you need help, feel free to ask in our new forums.

Important notes:
-If our repo is already in your sources, REFRESH your sources! The version number for the package should read 2.0.
-You need a good wifi connection. The script downloads the firmware from Apple which is very large.
-The script can take a long time, and will not always reboot your device when finished, for reasons out of anyones control. If you feel it’s taking too long, I would say 30+ minutes, go ahead and reset it. It should boot into 1.1.3.
-If it finishes and you are stuck in Recovery Mode, fear not! Simply run iBrickr and it will automatically detect and fix this. Again, this is out of our control. This is common with all updates/jailbreaks.

The comment system here doesn’t provide enough interaction for enough trouble shooting and interaction. I hastily set up some forums (I promise, I will make them prettier in the near future). Feel free to ask questions and discuss all relevant topics…most pertinently, 1.1.3 trials and tribulations. Go forth and seek knowledge: Modiphone.net/forums
