ZiPhone 2.3 Released (PC and Mac GUI)

February 16th, 2008

The amazing ZiPhone app has been updated to 2.3. If you haven’t been following along, ZiPhone is an all-in-one activation/jailbreak/unlocking tool for all iPhone and iPod Touch firmwares.

ZiPhone

Feel free to post in the forums if you need any help with this app. The jailbreak procedure is pretty straightforward. Do a normal upgrade to 1.1.3 in iTunes, and then run the app with the jailbreak option checked.

Site update: everything fixed

February 13th, 2008

Please excuse the mess here recently. I completely botched a wordpress update and accidentally deleted our template, images, etc. I even managed to completely break the rss feed. And in trying to fix it, I deleted all the forum files. The database was unaffected, so there was no data loss. Everything should be back to normal now, minus some broken images in archived articles (oh well).

So what’s the moral of the story? Always backup your files before attempting anything stupid! An adage that can be applied to iPhone/Touch hacking, mind you.

SNES emulator released to public

February 11th, 2008

Last month we wrote about a private beta of snes4iphone, and now it has reached version 1.0.0 and has gone public. It supports save states, landscape and portrait modes, and many more features. Core optimizations and sound are promised for the next release. Get more info and download links at ZodTTD.

Offline Wikipedia reader for iPhone/Touch released

February 8th, 2008

You can now carry the entire Wikipedia on your iPhone or iPod touch, sans wifi/internet. The catch? It will hog 2GB of storage on your device. Not to mention it won’t always be up to date (current English dump is dated October 07). But then again, those old school encyclopedia sets we use to use were outdated by the time they reached bookshelves, too. The app is complete with search, autocomplete, inter-article linking, and more…but not without some bugs. Download and more info available at the developers site, or the Google Code page.

Xbox Live Friends List native app released

February 8th, 2008

This app was released under my radar less than two weeks ago, and has just been updated to version 1.6. This simple app lets you track your friends activity on Xbox Live. Because of limitations with the Live SDK, the app can’t actually fetch your friend list, so you’ll need to manually enter friends you wish to track (a one time affair). You can then see their current status, latest activity, and gamercard. A very intuitive app for gamers on the go.

iXboxLive

Since iXboxLive wasn’t on any Installer repo for easy installation, I went ahead and put it on our own repo. Simply add our repo to your sources list, and you’ll find iXboxLive under Utilities. For a manual install, or additional information, check the iXboxLive googlecode page.

New native Tetris app released, gesture controls

February 8th, 2008

Tired of the tiny buttons in MobileTetrominos, and looking for some better touch screen action? A new tetris app (creatively named Tetris!) has been released, complete with gesture controls. The controls scheme still sounds far from perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction.

1.1.2 and 1.1.3 OTB software unlock!

February 8th, 2008

George Hotz has single handedly done the “impossible.” He has released a software unlock for the 4.6 bootloader, aka 1.1.2 otb and 1.1.3 otb. What’s most impressive is that this was achieved within 24 hours after he started working on it. You can read about the entire adventure on his blog.

The best part is that it’s a dead simple procedure. Here’s the procedure:

WARNING!! This modifies your baseband. I take no responsibility if your phone is damaged from this. Please do not email for assistance. You can get help in irc listed below. This script will allow you to unlock your phone with geohot’s methods. If you have success with this method, you should donate to GeoHot.

Steps (can be done on any phone version, 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3):

-Set “autolock” in settings to never: Settings, General, Auto-Lock

-Install the “Geohots Gunlock Script” unlock script package from BigBoss’ Experimental/Beta Repo
(BigBoss’s beta repo is found in sources category inside installer).

-Install BSD Subsystem + Term vt100

-On 1.1.2 or 1.1.3, go to settings, and set AIRPLANE mode to ON

-Open termvt100 and type:
cd /usr/bin
geounlock

-That’s it! Note, you must be on 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 soft upgrade for you to receive signal.

If you’re not on 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 upgrade/jailbreak to get there.

Note to those performing the above inside 1.1.3:
If you get resource busy errors or error 16’s, try repeating the above using Erica Sadun’s UICTL to unload commcenter. You would use UICTL before typing the term commands.

If you have any suggestions or bug reports you can get help in #iphone on efnet or on irc.osx86.hu.

anySIM 1.3 (prematurely?) released, dev-team heeds caution

February 5th, 2008

Other sites are reporting about anySIM 1.3 being released on Zibri’s blog. Zibri writes:

This is Version 1.3 Of anySIM.
This version unlocks baseband 4.03_13_g
It’s only for bootblock 3.9 don’t use on 4.6
To use it, upgrade the baseband then
put the iPhone in airplane mode and run it !
It works also in JB 113 OS…

Before you get too excited, please note the Dev-Teams warning: “1.1.3 anySIM IS NOT FINISHED! DO NOT USE IT!”
Their emphasis, not mine. I would take notice and wait for the water to clear before jumping in.
