1.1.3 is the “SDK firmware”?
January 22nd, 2008 | by Justin Nolan |As you continue to grumble about the 1.1.3 jailbreak method not being released, some interesting information has surfaced. While the dev teams are keeping the jailbreak private as they await the release of the SDK–and the subsequent firmware to enable software distribution–it’s possible that 1.1.3 might just be THE firmware.
Nate True did some digging in the new firmware (with the help of said unreleased jailbreak) and discovered:
-SpringBoard no longer meeds modification to show extra apps in the /Applications folder
-Apps now run as “mobile” instead of root
-Subsequently, preferences are now stored in /var/mobile instead of /var/root
-SpringBoard has a new class called “SBWidgetApplication”, which hints at widget support in some form
Couple this with the fact that the iPod touch app pack proves distribution is now possible (granted, slightly different since the apps are already in the firmware waiting to be unlocked), and Nate boldy claims (really… bold font): The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications.
Moral of the story is we may not see a new firmware next month along with the SDK, as was rumored to be the case. It’s yet to be seen if these findings will change the dev teams hearts and release the jailbreak early, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
